Silver Falls & a perfect day

Woke up and wanted to get outside today for sure. It was a nice 60 degree day and with the sun trying to come out every few minutes. The girls and I loaded into the car and headed for Silver Falls. They haven't been there before and Its what a homesick kid like me needed on this trip. Get into the greenery and walk with my kids. We walked probably 3+ miles and the girls were troopers. Notice the Peils hiking shoe attire. Next time we'll be better prepared there. But it was a perfect day.

Deja Vu. Ive made that statement quite a few times on this blog. I've been wrapped up with facebook and twitter only and leave this alone. I feel its time to get back on the bandwagon. One reason is I dont have internet at my apartment and I can post to twitter from my phone and it updates facebook so I'm able to post random stuff whenever on the fly.

I'm visiting my girls this weekend and staying in Salem. Its really nice being back in oregon and playing with them. Its been 3 months since i've seen my girls and that is too long. its been brutal trying to survive in Baltimore and not see my girls more often. Its just difficult to budget flying out with supporting two households and all that goes along with that and pay for tickets to fly out is just about impossible. Need to figure it out.

Baltimore has been good. I moved to the city to be close to work and I get a chance to ride my bike a lot more. I spend most of my time working on a program for designs to hit the market quicker. It's been rewarding but also mad stressful. If UA were in PDX i'd be in a perfect situation, but Baltimore isn't quite the city you want to put roots in. UA did buy all of Tide Point which means its going to remain a Baltimore company. And they continue to grow like mad. We've probably doubled in employees in the 1.5 yrs i've been there. Crazy.

We'll off to whip up some waffles for the girls. Working on keeping this more upto date. Goal #1 when i get back is to get internet so I can video chat with my girls and update family and friends back here on the west coast that are curious how I'm doing out East, since i'm really bad about calling people. I'm just not a phone guy. Never really have so any of you out there that I haven't called to update on the life and times of T Peil sorry. When rae and i got married she made sure she connected with everyone with updates, and phone calls are her thing. So i'll try and update this more often so those of you that are curious, you'll know the skinny. Facebook and twitter blurbs aren't the proper way to see how i'm doing, those are everything from random blurs of mental energy to a line from a song that i'm listening to at the moment.

I keep seeing this video on many web sites and for some reason I'm totally drawn to watching it. I have some of their music and honestly just listening to them doesn't do it for me. I have a ton of other albums I'd rather listen to. Even for background music, but I kept wondering why do I like to watch it and listen, but just to listen is not enjoyable. What I figured out this, I'm not really into musicals, and or opera or plays so much. But this to me is an opera or play. Very theatrical and I'd see these guys play a show and it would be chocked up to "I went to a play this weekend and saw Rammstein". Now if I want to catch a concert, these guys aren't my cup of tea so to say. I just don't care for it. But I enjoy this style of theatrics mixed with music. Would be very much like a Rob Zombie show in LA. where you get the full Halloween Ghoul sets and cast of side characters. So now I understand why I like to watch this video when I see it on sites.

I'm 38 and still love where music takes me and how it makes me feel, and I feel like I'm easily persuaded by moods and visuals in music. And I Love It.

Lets see Christmas came and went in Baltimore. We had a great Christmas with my parents. January has been pretty much a blur. Work has been pretty demanding, which is good and also tiring. We've been home bodies otherwise since its been super cold. Its been sunny and clear a lot, but windy and cold. Right around the start of the new year I heard about a local artist that just found out he has cancer. He's married and has a couple of kids and doesn't have insurance. So they are having a benefit show to raise money for him. I was asked if I'd like to contribute. Its been forever since I've painted anything and I've been wanting to for a few years now. A few christmas' ago my parents actually bought me a super nice ease so Its up and I'm painting again. We have some extra room in the new house so I put some space together and getting on this piece for Mike's show. Here are some pics of my corner of the sun room and my start.

I seem to be a twit head. really I update twitter, which feeds my facebook and the side bar here and that is my life now. just snippits and random pix of my rambling life. Sorry family and friends that dont subscribe to all the online "networking". Your digital junkies. I've been working my butt off at the new job here in Baltimore. So when I'm not designing and staring at a monitor for 10 hours a day pushing pixels, I'm turning off and tuning out. for real. other than the random update to twitter via the phone.

I'll work on putting some stuff on here and update randomly.

BTW its December. WHAT... yep.

This is going to be a video I watch on the regular if we end up moving somewhere else. Not until you get close to actually moving away from your city to work in another do you start to wonder if its really worth it. I mean, I love this town. I just wish there were jobs here. Anyhow if you don't live in Portland, don't watch the video, you'll just move here and you wont have a job. If I do move, I will watch it at least once a month...

I got the opportunity to fly out to Baltimore to interview for a Sr Design job. The team was really cool. And the company is still growing like mad so we'll see. I flew out early thursday morning. It was the first time I flew with SouthWest Airlines and at first I was not excited when I discovered that its a find your own seat airline. They load you in groups of A-B or C and 1-30 and 31-60. When I was flying out my first flight was C and in the 50's or something, which means I was last on the flight, and felt kinda like when your in grade school and as you look at a seat, you quickly look to the people around it and see if its inviting or no eye contact and grumpy. One benefit to losing some weight, is that I fit pretty good in those seats now. My connecting flight It was pretty much middle seats except for the last row next to the bathroom. It was a window seat and I took it.They are comfy seats, roomier than the other airlines. And the staff has great attitudes, pretty quick humor. On my last leg, one of the stewards kept telling me that he wanted to get me a drink because I had the worst seat on the plane, after some understanding that it was on the house, not on him.... I accepted and relaxed in my seat getting ready for Baltimore. I'll cover the flight home here quickly: they flew me back through Salt Lake, and that was a first and now a prefered choice for transfer (Chicago and Detroit sucks). I was in the B's coming home so seating was easy and its my first choice airline now.

When I landed I called the hotel and asked what was the best way to get there. They were too far away for a shuttle so they said for $30+ I can take a cab (UA is reimbursing my travel), Hotel shuttle service and it was $10-$15 bucks or the Light Rail for $1.60. I'm a fan of light rail/subways systems. They take a little longer, but if you have time take it. I always get a better feel for areas by the people that use them and they are often off the interstate so you see areas of Baltimore you'd miss flying by it. Luckily my hotel was 2 blocks off the stop. And it took roughly 15-20 minutes to get from the airport to my stop. I will have to say that south Baltimore is pretty rough. I mean really rough. Where my stop was is right at the Orioles Park, and the Ravens Field. The last time I flew out east I left mid day here and didn't get to my hotel till after midnight. This trip started with me getting up at 4:15 am, but getting to my room by 5 pm was nice. They put me up at the Sheriton Inner Harbor. Pretty cool spot. I unpacked and layed out my material for the interview. I was thinking of hitting the streets to figure out what the area looked like. I saw that they had a pool and opted for the swim and dinner in their Orioles Grill. Pool was pretty much a kiddie pool, but it still felt good. Dinner was decent. I shut down early.

My interview was at 10 and not too far from the hotel. It was pouring rain. I had to remember that we were right on the water, and wet weather is a standard it felt like the oregon coast. I grabbed a cab and drove out to the UA offices. I know that UA is a small company that is growing and coming from Nike I was anxious to see what it looked like. The offices are located in one of the industrial areas of Baltimore. Its right next to a sugar mill (i think thats what you'd call it) Ships from all over drop off raw sugar and they process it there. The air had a sweet smell and at times kinda like caramel. There is a dock right at the building for the boat taxi's. I'm not sure of the history of the building, but its an old red brick building. They are expanding into a building next to it thats connected via sky bridge.

I interviewed with the HR rep, and some PLM's along with two other designers. Everyone is really cool, and working well with the fast pace with all the positive growth. Around noon the Art Director came in and asked if I was hungry, I said that I could eat so we went to a local Pub/Cafe down the street. It was nice to take it out of the office and still talk through where the position can go and what they needed. I'd have to say that it would be a good fit for me and them. We went back and looked over my portfolio's, then I got a tour of the offices. Coming from Nike it felt like the size of one of our sample closets on campus, but I like that everyone is close. Footwear, Hard goods, Advertising and apparel are all close to everyone so the brand comes off pretty tight. I headed back to the hotel around 2:30, took a shower and figured my game plan for the night.

Around 4 I hit the streets. I asked the front desk where I could go and find some shops, I brought the only rain coat I have at the time and it was a packable rain slick in my camping gear. Since losing weight all my jackets are like wearing parachutes. I didn't find any shops, but got a good walk around the buildings which like most city's, around 5 on friday everything is closed. I found a coffee shop and mainly just wanted to go in somewhere and dry off for a minute. Converse for footwear is not the appropriate shoes for this weather, I was soaked from the knee down. I finished my coffee and headed back out into the weather, I couldn't pass up wandering in a city I've never been in. The art director gave me a heads up on a cool restaurant/bar so that became my goal. I found the road that should take me there I didn't even notice on the map that I'd walk through Mt Vernon cultural dist. Going from skyscrapers to old churches and statues in a block. After about 30 minutes of walking I found the pub and had a drink. Its called Brewer's Art. I was getting hungry and off to find some food. I walked a few blocks and found an Irish pub with a good menu. It was still pretty wet and around 9. I'm calling it a night, not too far I found the light rail station. Rode it back to my hotel, stripped off my wet gear, took a hot shower and crashed.

Saturday morning I searched out a starbucks near by. I grabbed my camera and headed out to find it. I walked the Inner Harbor and took some pics. Found the starbucks and headed back to the hotel to pack up and hit the rail back to the airport. The flight home was pretty uneventful and went smooth. I'm a fan of SW Airlines now. I landed around 5:30 and my buddy Jason picked me up (Rae was at a birthday party). Jason and a friend are starting a new business and they were part of a block party down town. I cleaned up and went down to check it out. It was nice to come home, the tree's, the people and my friends makes the thought of moving really difficult. But I need to work, and I need to work in a manner that helps me grow as a designer. Maybe someday I'll be a better freelancer, but for now I look out the comfort an security of a larger company with the insurance and 401K. We'll see how it turns out.

but for now, I'm needed upstairs to wrangle kids and get outside.

Well here i am typing again that I'll do better at posting here, and we'll just have to see. News, well I was part of a massive layoff at Nike. I've been looking, searching, rethinking, wondering, stressing, and not giving a crap for 6 weeks now. I've been flowing in and out of those feelings for a while now. Today, well today I'm glad were going to church. Theres another change that has moved back in. Its not the hail mary prayer, "God I need a job...." Its just been that I've been so self involved and trying to figure out what I need to do that keeps me sane and provides for the family, that I've overlooked one of the biggest part of my life. It was before the kids, before my wife, before any resemblance of a career. It is my faith. My Hope. My path. So with this recent change of career choice and change, I'm not starting anything new I'm turning back around and walking with that faith, hope and path in mind. And being mindful of the steps I do take. With that I'm re-opening this blog to do what I started, to online journal my thoughts. Not to think of it as a source of news or info to the world, but something for me. And if your a voyeur, read away. otherwise, I'm typing this for me.

Saturday 28. I got up and wanted to do something with the crew, something outside of the city is what I had in mind. sometimes I feel as if the buildings, streets, sounds of cars and sirens makes me feel boxed in. Even though Portland is pretty open, and lots of tree's, but I feel like where ever I look there are people. So I need to get out once in a while. Rae was in the mood to organize some things so I took the girls and we found a trail in Forest Park. It was a good walk, a gentle climb for about 30 minutes, and we snacked at some spots. Ivy wanted to go home about 2/3rds of the way up, but I talked to her about all the neat things out there and we started finding different plants and things to see then she took off to the end of the trail. Funny thing as we were getting near the top I heard some sort of buzzing, machine like... Off in the distance. As we got near the end of the trail at the top. It was a lawn mower, the trail end was to some guys driveway to a massive house. Which brought me to a screeching halt of the mental nature walk. Usually forest park is pretty excluded and people live on the outskirts, this particular trail was wedged in from the main road to ritchie rich's driveway in the sky.

After naps we loaded up the cooler and headed out to Oxbow park. Its on the Sandy River and a pretty big park. it again is pretty close to the city, about 10 minutes outside of Gresham. But its a pretty drive, and its on the river. We went to play on the river bank and I thought it was running icewater again, but it was tolerable. so much so that we were all wading to the knees and staying in and the girls were almost fully swimming. We worked on a rock wall (horse shoe shaped) in the river for a while, till we got hungry and we were losing our sun. We packed the bbq and food, so we went to one of the campgrounds with a play structure and grabbed a table and started dinner. The girls played then we ate, then we all played. Sun setting and mosquitos got us packing up. Got home around 9ish. kids went down well. It was a nice day.

I found this image and flipped my lid. I used to have this toy. It was so rad. You could program it to navigate. You could program it to go forward 6 ft then turn 30 degrees and go forward 4 feet, turn 180 degree's then fire. And it would make this lazer fire sound and a little light would strobe from the from. Good gawd it was mega cool. Aside from my remote control robotic arm, these were the coolest ever. I should have been an robotic engineer.

Beach Sunday

We decided to run over to the beach yesterday. It was raining in the morning over there and the weather said it was going to be overcast and 40's we decided why not just go for it. When we crossed over the range it was nothing but blue skies over the ocean. Turned out being warmer than 40's not sure what, but rae was in her t-shirt relaxing in the sun. A little windy though, but still a great day at the beach....

We keep it simple at the Peil house on this Hallmark holiday. Rae knows I love her, and I try to keep it on the regular of how much I do love her so really its just another day to say what I feel every day. With that said we do enjoy telling or girls "Happy Valentines Day, I Love You!" And they love telling us this back. We went out for a little walk in the morning along the East Esplanade. And finished the night off with some ice cream with the girlies.

well I've been super busy, who isn't. but this blog has been buggin me lately. I've been pretty much just posting vids that I see on other blogs that I think are cool and not really blogging anything. I started this blog to have a place to just throw some words down on whats going on in life. I haven't done that in what feels like a year. So I'm going to try again and get some quick blurbs on here more. I'm pretty sure I'm just typing this to myself since who wants to read a blog with no real continuity or personal voice. And I'm not sure if it should matter if anyone reads this. so with that said, here's to getting back into blogging. heck I know my family reads it so its an open letter to family and friends.

December is here and its here quickly. we had a nice thanksgiving over at a friends house. I was over at Lances house for one of the debates and his cousins wife Elizabeth and Modi made an amazing dinner for the evening, after the debate we gathered around the table and ate well. We talked about how nice it was and since thanksgiving was around the corner we should have a throwdown. everyone present was onboard, and we all thought of something we liked about turkey day and made it. I like the turkey aspect of it, so I made a turkey and gravy. came out pretty good i might add. Digs made some great sweet potatoes, Modi put together some amazing traditional Thai dishes, and Elizabeth killed it on some vegitarian dishes. Sooo good. Lance provided beverages. the kids had a blast running around everyone and making new friends. I had a great night.

Friday we relaxed in the morning and I started back on my shed that Lance helped get started the previous sunday. Jason came over and we tackled the rest of the assembly.

Saturday I got out early and went over to Rae's parents house to cut some wood. Next to their house is a nursery, and he had to cut some trees down that were on the back of his property, he cut all the big stuff, and left quite a bit of good sized branches, I cut a truckload with my chainsaw. Rae and the girls came out to help and Rae got some chainsaw time in too. She's a great lumberjack. after lunch we made our way home and started our new wood pile for next season.

Sunday we headed to the mountains to get our christmas tree. We don't have really any snow right now except for mt hood being pretty white. It was a beautiful clear day even though we didn't have any snow. The girls were kinda bummed but we promised them when we get some snow we'll hit the mtns to play. We found a spot that looked like there might be some tree's and stella and I hiked up the hill looking for a noble. We had to crawl pretty slow up the hill and through the brush. it was one of the hardest little climbs I've had to do, not steep but everything was wet, and not a path to be found anywhere, so we blazed our own trail. crawling over logs and scrub brush, it was thick. after a good crawl/hike we turned around and headed back down the hill. once back on the road. I went back in on my own and found a tree a couple hundred yards up the hill. after getting soaked I made it back to the car with tree in hand. we roped it off and headed to our yearly luncheon at Calamity Janes. Hmmm....

We got home and put the tree in the house sunday night, and i organized the garage. it's good therapy for me to have my crap in order and not just "in" the garage, but organized in the garage.

so back to work and the grind till christmas which is pretty damn close.

my 2 cents this holiday, dont spent money you dont have, and dont buy gifts for people just to buy something for someone. if you dont know what to buy for someone, should you be buying them anything? and remember a lot of people are out of work this season and broke. help out your local food bank. help put food on someone's table this year that can't afford it. Kids don't know where the food comes from, they just remember sitting around the table with family and friends and eating together.

I love that he's doing this. and I love the digital age we live in that this can happen. It seems that Obama is going to have a weekly youtube video that will cover a current topic in politics. Its easy for someone to take office and go back to the ranch per se until you actively take role in your new job. but to have your own "state of the union address" on your own is nice. call it smart politics, or what it is, keeping your country upto date with how things are coming.

Texas to PDX

Well I'm in Cortez Colorado, grabbing some free wifi from a little coffee shop. I'm sitting in the parking lot with clear and 40 something degrees at 6000 ft. I slept in a cheap hotel in Durango Co last night. Was planing on sleeping in the "New" Element, but it was around 27 degrees outside and didn't want to freeze and kept getting cars rolling by slowly. I figured might as well pay a couple of bucks and get a room with heat and a bed without people looking in. I flew into Dallas tuesday morning to get a new car we picked up. New to us. Its pretty much the exact same Element we have now but the new one is AWD and is blue. Same mileage as ours too. But this one was a great price. And I was ready for a little road trip. Going to try and get home by tomorrow morning. So I better get back on the road. Just wanted to post some pics. I'll update later and post more pics.

I dont want a nation for me, I want one for everybody.

I've been dreaming of a day when the US starts to adopt some of Euro practices for transportation (Euro Rail). Of course it a huge financial risk, but I think that people are more prepared for this now more than ever. We still want to see this beautiful country that we've been gifted to live in, but damn it can be challenging and expensive with flying and driving. Flying is expensive and terrible until we implement the bio-fuel, but thats 3 years out still, and with flying you miss so much beauty we have. So an Ameri-Rail system would ROCK. With California its a start, and a start is all we need. I embrace the idea fully.

Someone posted a link on facebook of some commentator speaking about colleges today, and came from the usual angle of how colleges are leftist, commie, tattooed, pierced, hair colored, tree hugging, naturalist breading ground. Below is my comment on the video.

Radical Right going after Radical Left. Good God, where are people that use "common sense" and live in the balance. If the fence is mediocrity, then I guess balance decision making is tightrope walking and more of a challenge than shutting off logic and running to extremes on both fronts. I'm so tired of FOX NEWS.

Well its been crazy at work. just about everything seems to have had some sort of change or switch to have to adjust to. the only constant is that I still design graphics for apparel and I spend 60% to 80% of my life in front of a lifeless machine. Brutal. Otherwise everyone is doing alright. Summer is over and fall is here. I'm ready for fall. I love the crisp air and colors. Not much new to share other than I should be working right now. So off I go. Here are some pics of the new work area. I finally got a window. Skylight to be exact. and out of all the designers I lucked out with the placement in my work grid landed me in this corner with a WINDOW... pretty coveted spot. I'll post something soon I hope.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), built by European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), is the world’s largest and highest energy particle accelerator and most complex scientific instrument ever created. Chris Mann of CERN produced this great video the explains how the LHC works.

Yesterday the LHC had it’s first successful test firing which is part of a massive experiment to recreate the conditions a few moments after the Big Bang. Some were concerned that when the LHC was switched on it would produce an black hole that would destroy the earth. Luckily we now have this handy website that helps answer the question “Has the Large Hadron Collider destroyed the world yet?”

I've been wanting one of these for years. Its a 1975 14 foot Winnebago. Small and light. were going to be doing some work on the inside to get it tightened up, but its dry, and has a heater and a stove. Were camping! even in the winter. Has an awning to get out of the weather as you enter the mini palace... well not yet, but wait and see....

Vacation Day One

Yesterday I headed out for a little overnighter road trip. I kinda plotted a course. Kinda means that I made sure the road I went on actually went somewhere, meaning I've driven my share of roads that went to 40 miles of gravel before you saw pavement again, I wasn't in for that kind of trip on the motorcycle. So I kinda figured a loop out that would take me around hours of riding monday and maybe 4-5 for tuesday to get home. Well I picked a road I've never ridden and going into an area, that is new too. I went north on I-5 to the 503 (Woodlawn) and followed a river up to the Mt St. Helens monument park. I didn't want to take the direct road into the viewpoint because a group of us are doing that in a few weeks. So I took a southern road. Anyhow the ride is damn nice, it passes many lakes which were planning some camping trips in the near future. Stopped and had lunch in Cougar. Nice area, and cabin rentals on the lake. Back on the road I saw that the next gas was 65 miles, and I had gone 30 since my last fill so I knew I'd make it, but not too many side roads or I'd run out. So onward. Drove through some amazingly beautiful country. I hit NF-25 which takes you north and around the Mt. again a beautiful ride. I'd live out there.... for sure. I rode to Randle where I gassed up and grabbed something warm to eat while I waited out a small rain storm. Once I got the Randle I realized I was either going to head east on 12 and definatley get me on a long trip, or head west and be able to possibly make it home by dark. And after freezing the last 2 hours. I was thinking maybe a day loop was good enough for me. So opted of the 12 west and kept off the interstate still an amazing ride. I'd live in this area of WA if I could find a job. Love it. Enjoy the pics.

Back from North Dakota

Well let me cover this on a day by day play.

We flew out Wednesday morning and by morning I mean morning. We woke up around 5ish and threw the bags in the car, called our neighbor (who drove us to the airport, trish you rock!) We met grandma and marlo (grandma's brother) at the airport. It wasn't an easy start, the airport was busy surprisingly. And getting all of us through security without being visibly frustrated was a challenge. I really wanted things to be comfortable for grandma and marlo, and having the airport security getting frustrated quickly wasn't helping. So the 5 passes grandma took through the metal detector before we remembered she has a metal hip, from there it was some good frisking on grandma by the security to make sure it was only her hip setting it off. and after 10 passes with marlo and just about all his clothes off he made it through. They vowed to never fly via traditional airlines again. We flew through St. Paul, and through to Grand Forks ND. Once landed we got our rentals and headed for Lakota about an hour west. It was fun asking the rental agent how to get to lakota. She said leave the airport and take a right on 2. 2 being one of the few freeways running through ND. We stopped off at SunLac the local hotel/restaurant/lounge. I ordered the walleye sandwich and figured I didn't need another one again, that was our last meal there. We met some family and old family friends. Once we were done with the meal and chit chat we were off to find our house. Rae found us a spot on Devils Lake which is 15 miles outside Lakota where all the festivities were going down for the weekend.

Once we got to the rental which was approximately 4 miles down a gravel road and well worth the rough ride. The home away from home was above a garage, a huge garage. A 3 bedroom with a single bathroom and open dining room and living room. We were stoked to have a little kitchen area. Rae went and found a store and we stocked the house with breakfast and lunch things for us all. Grandma and Marlo had their own rooms, our room with the kids had bunk beds. These bunks were the over sized backwoods pine bunks, they were comfortable. Almost sold us on them for our house in portland.

Our purpose of this trip was to accompany marlo and grandma on the 125th celebration of Lakota as a city and an all school class reunion from the past 100 years. This was going to be their last trip to ND and we wanted to come along and help out when needed. Lakota is a small town of less than a 1000 people. Its primary income is from farming, and minor sustaining of the community. Don't ask rae if there's a coffee shop.

The following day we walked the school and it was pretty cool to see it. pretty similar to most schools I went to growing up, as most all of them were old. Lakota HS was definitely cleaned up before the weekend. Paint was fresh.

Each afternoon we went back to the house and let the girls nap. One day after naps we ran into town to hit up the public pool, the girls had a blast, although Ivy didn't want to get in. She got her toes wet and the rest of the time she was running around the pool watching stella play. When she'd turn her back to the water I'd splash a little water her way, and she'd turn around and yell "NO" at the pool, like her dear old dad couldn't do that. Funny. The pool closes at 5 and we had a banquet at 6. So we flew back to the house and changed loaded back up and out again. Needless to say we put a LOT of miles on our rental.

The banquet was fine. we ate with grandma and marlo. It was a nice dinner. the best part was the after entertainment. they had a "comedian" a North Dakota "Comedian" for the evening entertainment. believe me you don't want any more info than that. I'll post a pic below. Marlo's skin was crawling after 10 minutes. Stella was laughing and clapping, I looked over at her and she smiled at me and said "I don't know what he's saying" and kinda giggled. Cracked me up. We got out of there and grandma stayed. She bought the CD. The rest of us headed down town to wander around. Rae went and wanted to buy some fireworks, while she was out we sat and enjoyed the night. Sitting in the shade of the buildings it was probably 75 with a light breeze. heavenly.

That night we got home in time to get ready for the fireworks. Grandma and Marlo stayed in the house, while we headed down to the beach for homeowner fireworks. BTW ND fireworks are the fun illegal in Oregon kind. After the first boom Ivy flipped, so rae took her inside and I stayed with Stella. The owner of the rental was there with his family so we all just shared fireworks and let the kids play. They gave stella about 20 sparklers to play with and she was in heaven. We hung out on the beach till about midnight and went in. The mosquito's were eating us up. Stella was super good, and very polite. The other families kept mentioning how sweet she was. I was a proud papa.

The next day was similar, we ran out in the morning, put the kids down for a nap. Rae went out, I think this was the laundry day. Enough said. anyhow, rae was out and when the girls got up we headed down to the beach from the house and the girls played in the sand and stella and I went into the water. It was NICE... 88 outside and water surface temp was about 70. chilly under a foot, but damn nice. we played in the sand till we had to get ready for BBQ night. I thought it started at 6 like the night before, but I was wrong it started at 5 and when we got there the line was all around the park. And not much seating. so we decided to bail on it and head to the local DQ. After Ice Cream we all went home.

On Sunday we went into town and had breakfast at the community center. the usual, eggs, sausage, pancakes, biscuits and gravy and lots of fruit. Stella ate about 10 sausages by herself. crazy kid. from there we went to the cemetery to find family plots. It was a nice cemetery on a hill and again that light breeze makes the weather there really nice. We found Faheys scattered around. After photos we headed out the Devils Lake to check out the casino for lunch, grandma made the statement that they had "beautiful food". Once we got there, she sat down and started playing the penny games and when we told her it was time to eat she looked at us and said "I'm not going to eat, I'm not hungry." but what about the beautiful food?? as she slipped another 5 into the machine. So we ate the "beautiful food". Nothing special, mass produced buffet food. she wanted to stay and marlo didn't so I stayed. Rae wanted to stay too, I should have let her since the laundry day fiasco. but I'm an ass i guess and I stayed. after about an hour she was ready to go, so we headed home.

Marlo and Grandma weren't hungry so we took the kids into town for dinner. We spotted this spot called "the Barn Steak House". We had a nice dinner there. Rae had a steak and I had a 1/2 rack of ribs. Tasty! We headed back to the house and started packing to fly back home Monday morning.

Checking in at the airport in Grand Falls was nice. The grandparents had a heads up on what to do and they got through pretty easily. The flights home were good. Although the last leg was a bit of a pain because the kids were going crazy. it was a good flight.

Its been a while. Been busy and trying to get ramped up for summer.

We went to southern Oregon for memorial day weekend. Usually its reserved for camping and hitting up the boatnik. this year the weather wasn't so helpful to get out and hit up the river. It was overcast with some rain showers and the river was high and cold. They actually cancelled the drag boats because the water was high and fast. We ended up hanging out at my parents house and enjoyed that. Its always nice to spend some time in southern Oregon, especially when every thing is green and warm, I don't mind the clouds.

Last night my buddy Shane and I went to the Demon Hunter show here in Portland. He did some graphics for them so we were on the guest list, NICE. thanks Shane. We got to pass words for a few minutes before they went back stage. Always the coolest guys ever. Last time we saw them was in east portland and we got to hang for a while and talk graphic design, kids, and faith. Shane and I got some good hang time to, we spent allot of time waiting in between sets at the Hawthorne's outside seating. Even though I missed one of the openers that I really wanted to see, I caught the two acts that I was pretty excited to see. Of course Demon Hunter, they brought Living Sacrifice on the road with them which was awesome. I remember the first time seeing LS in Hunting Beach in like 92-93 I think. Unashamed opened with some other bands, but to think that it was that long ago. whew. Nice thing is that they are coming out with a new album this year and I'm pretty stoked to check it out.

Because Jimmy Carter is a Democrat and former president of the United States, his fawning before known terrorists, some clearly identified as being responsible for murdering American citizens and all outspoken haters of anything American, is being given a free pass by the media and by Congress. I consider what he is doing to be treason. What is so pathetic is that Carter sees himself as a great man and that he alone knows the way to world peace. He was a failure as president, and because of this he keeps trying to rewrite his legacy.

President George Bush is too much of a gentleman to publicly denounce Carter's actions, but that can not be said for Congress. This man is thumbing his nose at Bush and our government by defying legal orders regarding association with terrorists. Are there no voices in Congress and the media that have the courage to speak out?

Because of foolish people like Carter and some others, America is seen as weak and vulnerable. Carter set us up for attack by his actions when in office and seems to be determined to continue on this same destructive path.

Pathetic and taking shots at a president that is still trying to bring goodwill to a global community (remember we are a global community now, since 2/3rds of our "American" products are made up of foreign created parts, and this isn't an us verses them elitist mentality anymore, that shit doesn't fly anymore. We defeated Hitler, no need to resurrect him in a capitalistic American flag.) and find solutions to problems, where "lil' Bush" is willing to plummet our nation into poverty and put our dollar into such de-valuing state that our money isn't worth the cost of printing it, and his focus of goodwill is greed and making 5% of our economy rich and 95% of the rest of America into a recession. Lets send another 90 billion to a country 2/3rds the size of Texas. Hey when he's out of office why don't we send him over there to manage that country and we'll see what happens to a desert landscape riddled with oil rigs.. hmm similar to his home state what a surprise.

Well I loved this 70's show. And so I must say that I'm exited for SU09 when they are remaking The Land of the Lost. One part of this show that could keep me awake at night was the Sleestaks. The thing that creeped me out with these guys is that they hissed and were slow as heck. You could get away, but it was like they just kept on walking, like a zombie lizard freaky thing. Here is a shot from the original 70's show and a shot of the new updated Sleestaks...

Just got home from running around downtown for a while with some friends. We were stoked to get down the Upper Playground by 6 to see the Usugrow show. We got there just as they were dropping the curtain that leads you into the gallery from the store. Once we got in we were treated to some jaw dropping work. I've been a fan of his for about a year now and I was still a little breathless at the beauty of the pieces. He has an amazing way of handling the crisp black of the pen and ink, then he stipples to build in the depth, amazing. As I was walking around I noticed red dots started getting placed next to pieces. As i looked over my shoulder I noticed one of my favorite pieces he's done didn't have a red dot. without hesitation I parked in front of it until stephen walked by and I said put a sticker next to this one, its sold. I was sooo stoked to step up and get it. I usually back down from spending like this. I over think it, then talk it to rae till I'm blue in the face, then over think it more. then I walk away. sometimes I turn around to go back and with all this indecisiveness, I miss out. I'm stoked to have a usugrow in the house, well we will when the show is over at the end of may.

After leaving UP we went to Just B/Complex, they have a pretty cool showing this month of interpretations of classic pieces done in the artists flair. not bad, after heading out from there we were hungry and with next weeks surgery I was wanting Sushi, and not sure when I'll eat it again tonight was a good night for it with the right people. So we loaded up in the element and hit up Sushi Ville, funny name but good sushi for a fair price. we paid for our plates and headed home. Kinda nice to have an early night out. now I can sit at my computer and work till 12. at least tomorrow is Friday.

When a buddy of mine told me that his crew at Big Giant/Unkl were going to do a collaboration with Ipecac Recordings, Mike Pattons label and do band Unipos I had to get on board. The super cool thing is that these are on a subscription basis only. so they won't show up in stores. so they are rare. and I was lucky enough to get a set. I got in a little late so I think I'm missing the first two. I'll get those some day, but as for now I'm admiring the ten I scored. Thanks Jason! Take a peek.

a washing machine that is. well I've always had a decent washer around, they've always been used and in good shape. But usually been about 20 years old. not too bad for washers standards, but with two little kids running around we've definately put the ole washer through some tough weeks. and of recent wasn't doing the job anymore. so it was time to upgrade. we are pretty comfortable with making purchases off craigslist, but with where were at globaly its nice to think about the bigger picture while your getting things done. meaning, its nice to think about the planet while your making purchases. sample: buying a new car, well buy only what you need and get the best gas mileage and emission car that you can afford. Food: Buy local if you can, and go for the natual kind. Sidestep the franken-food. Appliances: get ones that are light on energy and water usage. Like our new love. Rae is still shocked with every load. That is awesome. Side info; Top loading washing machines use on the average of 42 gallons of water. Our new one uses somewhere between 8-14 gallons. still allot, but nothing like 42.

I've pretty much subscribed to the idea that tattooing someones name on ya other than your kids was some sort of hex on the relationship. we'll i don't believe in hexes or any of that crap. you control your destiny and own up to your shit. i'm planning on staying married to rae so I wanted to give her something more than flowers. here's some new ink. and the ring is for those days i don't want to wear a ring... rae did the same, I'll let her blog her ring experience.

seems like I read everyone elses blog, but never update mine. reason being, life is crazy right now. work is super busy, and family is great, but were keeping busy in our freetime. I've been working on some new stuff for the swoosh. which is fun, I'll post if it goes through. I really dont have much to say...

The weather has been amazing the past two weeks, which is standard in Oregon. we get the last two weeks of febuary, always sunny and warms up. and it has, but in about a week we'll be in the grey rain till may.

My buddy Dan, and by buddy I mean Brother. For those that know me know that I'm a bit of a nomad. I've spent my whole life, meaning whole life... since I was 5 moving. I liked it. It had its hard times and gave me a lot of good strengths as a person. One down fall is friends. I've made my share and left my share. And by jr high leaving was easy, lost some, but there were always more to be made.

But along the way when I got in my twenties I made some friendships that were strong, and trusting. I learned early on to not take certain friendships for granted. there are just a few in my life who have that spot "brother" in my book. Dan is one of them. I've known Dan for roughly 13 years, and have kept in touch. I was super stoked to learn that Dan was moving his family up to the great north wilderness of PDX, a big change from southern california. Dan started Soul Expressions tattoo about 14 years ago, and has built a great business from it. Now Dan resides in PDX and has opened a shop on the east side called Jaded Soul Tattoo, he and fellow tattooist extrordinaire Jade.

I'm working on some graphics with these guys, heres a sampler of what its looking like. and if your in the area and looking for ink. get ur ass in there. they've got skills.

We at the Swoosh are waiting for further testing on Leopard (the newest operating system for the MAC) and new software releases for it is killing me. I can't wait till we hop on board and UPDATE! Here's a killer shareware op for photoshop. its kinda like an online color community... just check it. Its called Modrian.
